Built in 1855 by Benjamin Franklin Prater, Prater's Mill is a water-powered mill originally fitted with the latest in grain cleaning, grinding, and sifting machinery, and is powered by Coahulla Creek. As the popularity of the mill grew, a cotton gin, saw mill, syrup mill, general store, and blacksmith shop were added by Prater.

Prater's Mill Dates from 1855 and is in remarkably good shape thanks to the Prater's Mill Foundation. Built by John Pitner, the grist mill and a nearby sawmill operated from a single water-powered turbine. Together the two mills carved a center of economic activity from lands that had only recently been part of the Cherokee Nation.

As the mill's popularity grew, Prater added a cotton gin, a saw mill, a wool carder (device that combs sheep wool), a syrup mill, a general store and blacksmiths shop. For almost a century, farmers lined up their mules and wagons before dawn, waiting for their turn with the millers.

Since its beginnings around 1855, Prater's Mill has been a gathering place for local farmers and their families. Arriving at the mill in mule-led wagons, the men folks would bring their corn to be ground into cornmeal; the women folks would shop at the store and visit with their neighbors to get up-to-date news in the area.
